Rich's dad's birthday is on New Years Eve, and this past birthday he turned 60! Mid December Rich approached me and told me that he wanted to surprise his dad and celebrate his dad's birthday with Phoenix. Of course that is an awesome idea! But of course what went through my head was 'what am I going to do on New Years Eve? I don't want to be alone!' So, I went to work the next day, explained the situation to my manager and he agreed to let me work remotely which meant that we were headed to Phoenix! I called my MIL immediately and we coordinated a plan to the two of us to fly in on Saturday morning (after Christmas) and leave the following Thursday (after NYE and birthday time). We didn't tell anyone because we didn't want to spoil the surprise - especially since my in-laws were headed to California for Christmas.
Now here is the inception part....Rich's sister joined us for the weekend which was a surprise to BOTH parents! We woke up early on Saturday morning and headed to the airport. After someone leaving something in her carry-on that was TSA inappropriate, someone going to the wrong airport and 3 starbucks coffees, we were on the plane on on our way to Phoenix for the surprise!
On the cab ride to their house we conspired on how we were going to execute the surprise. Would we doorbell ditch the house? Would we sneak into the back and spread out in the patio furniture? Would we go up one by one and ring the bell? How should we do this? In the end we decided to just ring the door bell. We could hear my MIL inside asking my FIL to get the door and that it was likely their neighbor. My FIL approached the door - Rich closest, Melissa on the end and me in the middle - and he looked out the window and said, "That's not Jacob (the neighbor)! I see...(pause) that's La Tache!" So he opened the door, we all yelled surprise and my MIL was even surprised to see Melissa there! It was a lot of fun!
After we all said our hellos and brought our luggage inside, we went to the nearby golf course for wine and lunch. It was a gorgeously crisp day.

We stayed in for dinner and football and decided that we would check out holiday decorations the next day at the Fairmont Princess Resort. I read this article before the holidays and knew that it would be a fun outing for all of us. Again, the weather was beautiful! We all concluded that it would have been better to see at night, but that we would have to check it out next year, we didn't want to go back on this trip.
Melissa stayed for the weekend because she needed to get back to work. Rich and I stayed through Thursday and were able to celebrate my FILs birthday with him. It was a wonderful trip and I am so grateful that my manager allowed me to work remotely so we could make this all happen!
(thank you Caitlin for the title inspiration)
